We thought the NC500 would be about long drives and big views…
but what surprised us most were the little things.

White sand beaches that don’t feel like Scotland.
Castles you just pull into without a plan.
Hidden walks where puffins live, caves you accidentally discover, and shell beaches that crunch under your feet.

Finding a secret garden tea room you’d never know was there unless you slowed down.
Cooking dinner by the sea, windows open, salt in the air and falling asleep with the sound of waves outside the van.

The NC500 isn’t a new route.
It’s been there all along, the pure beauty of Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 Now just made easier to follow for those who want to explore.
But if you really want to uncover the hidden gems, you have to slow down and wander a little off the beaten track.

It’s surfers chasing waves, golden hour walks that stretch longer than planned and waking up to a new view every day.

🌟 Monday thoughts 🌟

Sometimes I feel like I spend more time in my own head than anywhere else. Most of it is probably just thinking about whether I’ve remembered all the school lunches, replied to every message or email, and somehow survived the chaos of the last five minutes 😅 (then there’s the added bonus of my lovely kind watch telling me daily that I have had a stressful day and I need to rest 🤣)

It’s the start of a fresh new week, and a little more headspace, less mental noise, fewer thoughts running ten steps ahead and more moments actually feeling present instead of just on autopilot are definitely needed!

So for 2026, I’m quietly manifesting more of this. Imperfect days, unexpected adventures and laughing at the little stuff 🧡 A calmer pace, clearer headspace and the ‘you know what, let’s just go’ moments (bonus points if it involves cake or ice cream 🥰)

Hoping 2026 brings more of chasing the kind of days that sneak up on you, less stress, no plans, no pressure, just fresh air, quiet laughter and noticing how little you really need to feel good ✨

Still trying to decide what this year’s adventures will look like…
where we will go, how long we will stay, and which direction the van will take us next.

Looking forward to waking up to more mornings like this, they don’t look perfect, they aren’t aesthetically Instagrammable, and that’s why we love them so much 🥰 real life, a break away from the day to day! Breakfast by the van, sea views, crumbs on the table and wellies flung all over, while the waves roll in and the little ones eat before running off to play like it’s their own back garden.

And it makes me realise it doesn’t really matter where we go.
These little ones thrive in this environment, slow mornings, fresh air, space to roam and a freedom that feels like home.

They are already asking when our next longer trip is, counting down before we’ve even planned it! 🧡

We didn’t reach the summit of Helvellyn this time.
Striding Edge became too dangerous, the weather turned and the sensible choice was to turn around ❄️

And that’s ok.

The mountains aren’t going anywhere.
There’s no failure in listening, no shame in knowing when enough is enough.
Sometimes the bravest thing you can do is make the safe call.

Because days like this were never really about the summit anyway. They’re about the laughter, the catch ups you didn’t know you needed, the shared snacks, the deep breaths, and that feeling of being lifted just by being out there together.

So say yes.
Say yes to the early alarm, the muddy boots, the “shall we keep going?” moments.
Say yes to the day, even if the summit says “not today”.

Helvellyn… we will be back.
And next time, we’ll finish what we started 🏔️✨

Outer Hebrides Vanlife Edition 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

Isle of Harris and Lewis Itinerary

Slow roads, empty beaches, honesty boxes and sunsets that stop you in your tracks 🌅

The Isle of Harris (and Lewis) is one of the most peaceful places I think we have ever taken the van.

Here’s how we spent 3-4 days exploring after arriving by ferry from Skye ⛴️

🚐 Getting there
CalMac ferry from Uig (Skye) → Tarbert (Harris)
Arrive and slow right down… the roads are quiet and the pace is even quieter.

🏖️ Day 1 - Luskentyre Beach
Beach play, shells, walks, football on the sand and a sunset park-up with an honesty box.
The kids’ “back garden” was basically the Atlantic 🌊

🌬️ Day 2 - Huisinis Beach
Wild, dramatic and remote.
Honesty box stopover with toilets, showers & an indoor shelter if the weather turns.
Windy up on the dunes, but wow… the views.

🏞️ Day 3 - Isle of Lewis
Exploring further north with rugged coastlines, history and big skies.
A full day of wandering with plenty to see, including Lewis Castle and museum.

⚓ Day 4 – Tarbert
A slower morning exploring the village before heading back on the ferry.

✨ Top tips
• Stock up before you explore – it’s remote! The odd little shops are few and far between, none for miles and miles.
• Be set up for off-grid vanlife
• 3-4 days is perfect, but longer if you can

Tranquil. Remote. Unspoilt.

When you’re training for a marathon, you learn quickly that the miles don’t care about the weather ❄️

7am. Snow on the ground. The world still asleep.

And this is where the camper becomes part of the journey.
A warm place to get changed, somewhere to thaw out frozen fingers, a cosy seat to sit, breathe and recover. And most importantly, the ability for a hot, healthy coffee ready to go (@yourexhale is a must if you haven’t tried it ☕️).

It turns cold, uncomfortable winter runs into something manageable and even enjoyable 🤪

The van doesn’t just take us on family adventures and big mountain days. On long run mornings it gives me comfort, warmth and a little calm before heading home.

There’s something lovely about waking up to the van covered in snow ⛄️

Snow days, campervans and winter adventures ❄️🚐
… they need a bit more planning.

We don’t have snow tyres yet (they’re on the list), and ours has a pop top which we need to put up for us all to sleep, so we are extra cautious keeping warm - slow driving, checking forecasts, knowing when to stop and when to turn back.

Here’s what’s helped us on snow days ⬇️

❄️ Layer up - thermals first, then fleece, then waterproofs. No cotton.
❄️ Blankets everywhere - seats, beds, kids… instant warmth.
❄️ Hot food & drinks ready - soup, pasta, taking hot drinks out with you to warm hands = lifesaver.
❄️ Rechargeable hand warmers
❄️ Keep water from freezing - insulated bottles, keep water inside overnight in case the tap freezes- and put the heating continuously on low.
❄️ Footwear matters - dry socks, spare pairs, warm boots by the heater.
❄️ Slow driving only - we don’t have snow tyres yet, so we take it steady and plan routes carefully.
❄️ Check the weather constantly - and don’t be afraid to stop early.
❄️ Cosy over comfort - winter van life is about slowing down, not pushing on.

Cold outside, warm inside ❄️🔥
We loved Scotland in the snow, but have also thought of venturing into Europe in winter for skiing season.

1. St Mary’s Lighthouse, Whitley Bay @stmaryslighthousevisitorcentre
A tidal causeway where you can spot seals and dolphins 🐬 Go at low tide, stay for golden hour, and watch the light change the whole coastline.

2. Whinlatter Forest, Lake District

One of the best family friendly mountain forests in the Lakes. Tree lined trails and views over Bassenthwaite.

3. Tynemouth Beach
Long walks, cold sea dips and views back to the priory and King Edward’s Bay, perfect in every season.

4. Tobermory, Isle of Mull
Those colourful houses never get old. A proper postcard harbour with wildlife on your doorstep, the kind of place that makes you forget what day it is.

5. Isle of Ulva
Quiet, raw and wonderfully untouched. Feeling properly off-grid, leave your transport on the aisle of Mull and head over on the foot ferry.

6. Isle of Iona
Soft white sand, turquoise water and a calm, peaceful feeling which stays with you long after you leave.

7. Betsy Coed, Wales
A storybook village surrounded by rivers, forests and waterfalls. Slow wanders, woodland walks and cosy café stops after big days outdoors.

8. Alnwick, Northumberland
Historic streets, castle views and a real sense of character. Don’t forget to visit @alnwickgarden and @barterbooksuk too!

9. Honister Pass, Lake District

Dramatic doesn’t even cover it. Steep roads, huge views, slate mines, one of the most breathtaking drives in the Lakes.

10. Cheshire
Full of charm and pretty villages, perfect for relaxed weekends and reset days.

11. The Kelpies, Scotland
Impressive stop on your way up to Scotland and even better at sunrise or sunset.

12. Orrest Head, Lake District
For shorter family walks and big views. Also perfect to visit the nearby town of Windermere.

Hi, I’m Ashleigh 👋🏽
This is Toffee the VW… our little pocket of calm in a busy world.

This page is my safe space, a place to come when life feels loud, when the days are full, and when I just need reminding that an adventure isn’t too far away and doesn’t have to be big or full on!

I share our unplanned, imperfect adventures in our campervan the little ones named Toffee the VW with my husband Martin and our two children (7yrs 👦🏼 and 👧🏼11yrs), family travel, vanlife moments, mountain views, muddy shoes, cosy coffees and all the real life in between.

Beyond the van:

🏡 I live in the North East of England in a little town called Durham, which has its own charm and character and we love it here 🥰

🏃‍♀️ I love to run - this year I challenged myself to run five half marathons, and many other races and 2026 might just be the year of a marathon… maybe even two. Running is my headspace, my reset.

📸 I take far too many photos! Once a photographer for many years, maybe one day again. I love capturing the little family moments just as much as the big landscapes. I have captured many babies, family and weddings in my time, and now love to do the same on our own trips 🥰 (much to Martin’s joy 🤪)

⏰ I also work a 9-5 so this space is about fitting adventure, movement and creativity around real life. Early mornings, weekends, school holidays and full days.

You’ll also find outdoor cooking, hiking, mountain climbing, fresh air, adventure days, and time spent exploring with my family and friends. Always choosing adventures and outdoors.

2025 ✨ one year. one little van. so many memories.

From winter adventures close to home, to mountains, islands, Europe and everything in between … 2025 was a year of saying yes more often and making memories as a family.

January to December, here’s where we went 👇🏽

• January - Winter fun at High Force & Raby Estates ❄️ snowy trails, outdoor adventures for the kids and waking up to coffee and frosty air

• February - Lake District 🏔️ our go to place, mountain days and Martin on 134/214 Wainwrights

• March - Durham 🌅 home days, small van trips, beach walks and chasing sunrises and sunsets

• April - Lake District (again 😜) never running out of things to do, plus family time

You don’t have to visit Center Parcs in the run up to Christmas for it to feel magical ✨🌲

We usually visit Center Parcs every year, and the Forest of Lights running through January and February is honestly one of our favourite parts.

The woods are lit with colour, the atmosphere is calm and cosy, and it still feels just as special, if not more so without the December rush.

Wrapped up walks, glowing trees, hot chocolates and that peaceful forest feeling… winter magic done right 💫

(Just note: dates can vary slightly by Center Parcs venue)

If you have been thinking about a post Christmas break, don’t overlook January and February… the magic definitely doesn’t stop in December ✨

Tips for visiting Forest of Lights at Center Parcs:

🌲 Go at dusk – the lights really come alive as the sun sets and stay until after dark
🧥 Wrap up warm – winter walks are cosy but layers are key
☕ We take disposable cups to make a coffee in the lodge before heading out or grab a hot chocolate at the outdoor kiosk onsite
📸 Slow down – it’s perfect for relaxed photos and little moments

Not our usual Christmas setup… but the van was packed, Santa was ready, and the forest was waiting, ready for us to do Christmas, woodland style🎄🌲🚐

We packed the van up with Santa’s gifts, wellies, coats, skates and all the winter bits and headed off to do Christmas a little differently. Even when we are not sleeping in it, the van still feels like part of the adventure.

As an outdoorsy family, it was the perfect mix of festive magic and fresh air. Cozy forest lodges, Santa arriving, a full Christmas dinner with all the trimmings… but surrounded by trees, twinkly lights and that real woodland calm.

Every day was spent outside… roller skating around the forest paths, late night walks under the lights, cold noses and warm hands, roasted marshmallows, elves, carols and that winter wonderland feeling everywhere you turned. And swimming on Christmas Day itself just topped it off 🥰 water slides, the warm outdoor pool, steam rising into the frosty air ✨

It felt slower, simpler, more present.
Less rushing, more fresh air, more togetherness and so many little moments that made it unforgettable. Breathing it all in.

If Christmas had a capital, Kraków would be on the shortlist. From the moment you step into Rynek Główny, the city’s main square, you are wrapped in twinkling lights, the scent of cinnamon and roasting chestnuts, and the warm buzz of festive cheer.

✨ Christmas Market Magic
The markets here are next level! Wooden stalls brim with handcrafted ornaments, woollen hats, carved wooden toys, and traditional Polish gifts… perfect for picking up something special. Every turn reveals another treasure, from quirky gifts to timeless keepsakes.

🍽️ Foodie Heaven
Let’s talk food! You will never run out of tasty treats here.
⭐ Pierogi in every variety imaginable
⭐ Oscypek (smoked sheep cheese) with cranberry sauce - this was our absolute fav!!
⭐ Freshly baked babka and gingerbread
⭐ Sweet churros dusted with sugar and spice
⭐ Skewers, sausages and local delicacies galore

🍵 Winter Warmers
When the chill hits, there’s nothing better than a mug of herbata korzenna, spiced winter tea rich with cloves, cinnamon, and orange peel.

🎄 Lights, Tree and Atmosphere
The entire square glows under fairy lights, and the giant Christmas tree stands tall, a beacon of holiday spirit. Every evening feels like its own celebration.

📜 Old Town History
Kraków isn’t just beautiful, it’s historic. One of Poland’s oldest cities, its cobblestone streets and medieval architecture whisper stories from centuries past. From the Royal Castle of Wawel to the ancient town walls, it’s a place where history lives and breathes.

🌟 Nativity Scenes Everywhere
One of the most enchanting things here are the nativity scenes tucked into glass boxes all around the market and Old Town. Each one is different, detailed, artistic and reflective of local tradition, almost like tiny winter wonderlands within the city itself.

If you’re travelling with little ones and ever find yourself just passing the road signs for Mainsgill Farm Shop, make this your stop.

Nestled in East Layton, Richmond, North Yorkshire (DL11 7PN) just off the A66, it’s one of our favourite festive stops, we have passed it probably hundreds of times on the way to the Lake District or to see family 🚐❄️

At Christmas it feels so magical, twinkly lights ✨, real reindeer to visit, curious camels wandering about, farm animals to spot, and even a Santa post box where we posted our Christmas letters 📮🎅

Inside there’s a cosy café, farm shop full of local produce, a gift hall to explore, and plenty of space for the kids to burn off a bit of holiday excitement around the whole upstairs floor of festive essentials🎄

It turns a long drive into a memory and our little ones always asks to stop 🧡

In Icelandic folklore, the Yule Cat appears at Christmas looking out for anyone who hasn’t received new clothes… and if you haven’t? Legend says he’d eat you 😬

The tradition comes from rewarding those who worked hard before Christmas with something new to wear for the holidays 🧶✨

On the 4th day of Christmas… Iceland sends down another mischievous visitor from the mountains🎄😅 read below to find out exactly what I mean! 😉

Iceland doesn’t do boring Christmas traditions… instead, they have 13 mischievous Yule Lads (the Jólasveinar).

For 13 nights leading up to Christmas, one Yule Lad comes down from the mountains each night to visit children across Iceland.

Kids leave a shoe on the windowsill, hoping to wake up to a small gift… unless they have been naughty, in which case it’s a rotting potato 🥔

I have visited Iceland at Christmas for the last two years in a row, and love their traditions! Quirky, magical and very unique! 🧐

Meet the full chaotic Christmas crew:

🐑 Stekkjarstaur – Harasses sheep (despite having stiff peg legs)
🥛 Giljagaur – Sneaks into cowsheds to steal milk
🍲 Stúfur – Short and obsessed with stealing leftovers from pans
🍳 Þvörusleikir – Licks wooden spoons clean
🍽 Pottaskefill – Steals food straight from pots
🧀 Askasleikir – Hides under beds to steal bowls of food
🚪 Hurðaskellir – Lives for slamming doors at night
🕯 Skyrgámur – Has an unhealthy obsession with skyr
🥓 Bjúgnakrækir – Steals sausages and hides in the rafters
🪟 Gluggagægir – Peeks through windows looking for things to steal
👃 Gáttaþefur – Sniffs out baked goods with his enormous nose

On the third day of Christmas, December gave to me…
a KitKat latte in my favourite Christmas mug, lights twinkling, tree glowing, and five quiet minutes before the next thing on the list ☕️✨🎄

It’s the little moments that make this season feel magical, warm drinks, cosy corners, and slowing down where you can.

Winter vanlife has officially arrived… and the van got its first proper snow blanket of the season ❄️🚐✨

There’s something so peaceful about waking up to frosty windows, quiet mornings and that crunch under your boots that just hits different. Then heading back for cosy afternoon hot chocolates to help clear the mind and fill your cup ☕️

We have a few lovely plans coming up in the lead up to Christmas, and we cannot wait to share them with you.

Think festive adventures, twinkly villages, new experiences, chilled evenings and maybe a little vanlife cheating with a pre Christmas ✈️ thrown in for good measures 🤭.
And yes… we have got some exciting plans for Christmas itself too 👀✨ Stay tuned to see what we get up to over the next few weeks 🧡

Here are a few winter vanlife tips we have found helpful over the years:

❄️ Insulate your windows - reflective panels or thermal blinds make a big difference.
❄️ Layer up your bedding - fleece blankets and decent duvet make for cosy nights.
❄️ Warm the van before bed - a quick heat boost goes a long way.
❄️ Keep your water tank from freezing - store smaller jugs inside the van overnight if temps drop really low.
❄️ Keep the van ventilated - a little airflow helps prevent condensation (slightly open the window even when it’s cold - it helps more than you think!).
❄️ Keep a small brush or scraper handy for snowy mornings… we used ours today!
❄️ Check your routes - early snow or ice can be sneaky, especially driving in the dark (which we do quite often).

Tucked away in Llanrwst, North Wales, Tu Hwnt i’r Bont is one of the most photographed tea rooms in the UK… and it’s easy to see why. Draped in fiery red ivy this time of year, it looks straight out of a storybook 🍂🏡

We stopped by and couldn’t resist taking a few treats home too 🍰 A slice of Battenberg cake and some traditional Bara Brith (which I forgot to take a photo of!)

A few tips if you are visiting:

• 🚗 Car park: Just before you reach the bridge, don’t miss it! Otherwise, you will find yourself crossing a very tight stone bridge and finding somewhere to turn around 😅 (can you tell this is from experience)
• ☕️ Must try: Homemade cakes
• 🌉 Location: Right beside the 15th century stone bridge over the River Conwy
• 🕰️ Takeaway available

Tucked away in the Conwy Valley, Bodnant Garden is one of those places that really shows off in autumn… fiery reds, burnt oranges and golden yellows reflecting off ponds and tumbling streams.

Every path feels like it leads to another postcard view!
Take your time wandering through the garden trails and soaking up the crisp air.

• The Dell – a magical woodland valley with waterfalls and mossy bridges 🌿
• The Terraces – for stunning views over the mountains 🏞️
• The Lily Pond – a perfect autumn reflection spot 🍂

We pitched up at Waenfechan Campsite and honestly… what a find! Perched on a peaceful hillside farm with views stretching right across to the bay (you can even spot Llandudno in the distance), it’s the perfect mix of calm, comfort and those simple luxury vibes we love 🧡

Evenings soaking in the hot tub under the stars, mornings with mist rolling over the fields and nothing but the tweeting birds for company, this place just felt special 🫶

We took on Wales’ highest peak via the Llanberis Path, the most straightforward (but also the longest) of the 6 main routes to the summit. This one is approx. 15km and usually takes 5-7 hours to walk.

We decided to trail run it instead, just over 3 hours return, including a well earned cuppa and cake at the summit cafe before heading back down ☕️🧁

If you are planning your own climb, here is a quick guide to the main routes, in order of difficulty ⬇️

1️⃣ Llanberis Path – 15km | 5-7 hrs | Most gradual and easiest to follow links onto the Pyg/Miners track further up
2️⃣ Pyg Track – 11km | 5-6 hrs | Shorter but steeper, rocky sections
3️⃣ Miners Track – 13km | 5-6 hrs | Scenic start, steeper towards the top
4️⃣ Rhyd Ddu Path – 12km | 5-6 hrs | Quieter, dramatic ridge views
5️⃣ Watkin Path – 13km | 6-7 hrs | Tougher climb, especially near the summit
6️⃣ Crib Goch (via Pyg) – 9km | 5-7 hrs | The infamous knife edge ridge for experienced scramblers ⚡

🍁 Autumn up here is magic… golden leaves, rolling mist and (for once) no summit queues 🙌🏼 Although that might have been helped by the weather… wind and rain meant zero views this time, but we will be back! 🌧

We love love love vanlife… the freedom, the unpredictability and the magic of waking up somewhere new every few days.

But we also enjoy those family holidays in the sun, the all inclusive memories we have are also some of our favourites with family, grandparents joining, pool days and pure switch off mode 🌴

And let’s be honest… an all inclusive holiday doesn’t always mean no exploring… we just can’t help ourselves 🤪
There are chill days, and then there are days we are at the top of a mountain for sunrise… before heading back down for that well earned breakfast buffet 😋

📍 The Baumwipfelpfad Schwarzwald
(Treetop Walk Black Forest)

Such a unique way to experience Germany’s magical Black Forest – from above the canopy! 🌳

👣 First, you stroll along the wooden walkway (over 1,200m long!) rising gently into the treetops with views across rolling forest and mountains. Lots of fun adventurous ways of crossing the walkway!

🛝 Then comes the fun part – a 55m tall viewing tower with the option to spiral back down via the giant tube slide (extra charge but so worth it).

🌲 And once you’re back on the ground, the adventure isn’t over – there’s a woodland tree-trekking play area for kids to climb, swing and balance among the trees.

We parked up at Wild- und Freizeitpark near the Swiss border, not far from beautiful Lake Constance… and what a spot it was!

For just €10 we:

🦌 Slept next to the deer (with buffalo and rhinos as neighbours!)
🌙 Fed the deer before bed
🚶‍♀️ Wandered around the wildlife park after closing (not the ticketed part)
🚲 The lady from the pub next door pop by on her bike to collect payment (cash only)

There’s space for around 50 vans (if not more), but even in mid-August there were only 3 of us there. So peaceful, unique and such a special place to wake up. 🌿

If you visit during the day, the Wild- und Freizeitpark is such a fun stop, especially for families. 🐾 As well as deer, buffalo, lynx and birds of prey, there are play areas, picnic spots and even little rides. The highlight has to be the huge slide tower that looks out across the park - the kids will love it (and adults too!). It’s the perfect mix of wildlife and adventure before heading back to your van for a peaceful night beside the animals.

Here’s how we spent 3 unforgettable days exploring one of the most breathtaking regions in Italy 🚐⛰️👇

Day 1

📍 Cortina d’Ampezzo – future host of the 2026 Winter Olympics! 🏔️ This alpine town is already buzzing with energy, and it’s amazing to see it before the world arrives. We wandered the streets, grabbed some gorgeous mugs for the van and soaked up the views.

🚐 That evening, we parked up under a ski resort – the perfect base with epic Dolomites scenery right outside the van door.

Day 2

🌊 Our morning started at Lago di Misurina, a sparkling alpine lake surrounded by dramatic peaks – a peaceful spot with stunning reflections.

⛰️ From there we drove the road around Tre Cime di Lavaredo (Three Zinnen Peaks). Even without hiking, the views of these iconic mountains were absolutely breathtaking.

🚠 In the afternoon, we took the gondola up Mount Baranci and explored the alpine trails – a family friendly adventure with panoramic views. (I will shared more detail on this in a separate post!)

Day 3

🌊 Our final stop was Lago di Braies. We stayed overnight, then woke up early for sunrise. The lake was calm, the light golden, it was stunning. Exploring the shoreline and boat docks here felt like stepping into a postcard.

Even with just 3 days, the Dolomites gave us beauty, adventure and moments we’ll never forget.

Croatian sunsets are something else 🌅 and the Istria Region has some of the dreamiest spots to watch the sky turn golden.

Whether it’s from the beach, a harbour café, or straight out the back of the van, it’s you + me chasing light we’ll never forget.

Our favourite Istrian sunset spots:

✨ Valamar Lanterna Campsite (near Poreč) – nothing beats stepping out of the van and watching the sun dip straight into the sea.

✨ Poreč old town – sit along the waterfront with the basilica behind you and the horizon on fire in front.

✨ Rovinj harbour – pastel houses glowing as the sky deepens to pink and orange.

✨ Cape Kamenjak – rugged cliffs, crystal clear waters and endless horizons.

✨ Novigrad marina – reflections of the boats as the colours fade.

✨ Camping Amarin (Rovinj) – wake up to a sea view pitch and end the day with fiery sunsets over the old town in the distance.

Tucked away above Triesenberg, Stausee Steg is the largest lake in the country. Though it looks like a sparkling alpine dream, it’s actually a reservoir built back in the 1940s to power hydroelectric energy ⚡

Today it’s the perfect spot for a picnic 🧺, a paddle in the clear waters, and to spot the little duck house floating in the middle 🦆 – all with the most incredible forest and mountain backdrop.

✨ A little extra if you have time…

🕰️ Visit the quaint village of Triesenberg with its alpine houses and sweeping views.
🥾 Take a short hike on one of the well marked trails around Malbun, Liechtenstein’s ski resort town.
☕️ Or simply relax and soak in the mountain air with a coffee and strudel 🥧
🚶‍♀️ Walk across the border bridge into Switzerland Alte Rheinbrücke (the last surviving wooden bridge across the Rhine) it’s not every day you can cross into another country on foot in just a few steps!

If you’ve ever seen photos of a fairytale island church surrounded by turquoise waters and mountain backdrops – that’s Lake Bled 🧡 and yes, it’s just as magical in real life.

Here’s how we made the most of our day here:

📍 Morning – Start with a walk or bike ride around the entire lake (it’s about 6km). You can hire a bike for 2 hours for just €10 🚲 – such a fun way to soak in all the views. We biked the loop while I also laced up my trainers and ran it 🏃‍♀️. The best way to get your bearings and see the lake from every angle!

🛶 Midday – Take a traditional pletna boat or hire your own rowing boat to the island. Climb the 99 stone steps up to the church and ring the wishing bell (legend says your wish will come true).

🍨 Afternoon – Wander up to Bled Castle for panoramic views over the lake and mountains. Don’t forget to try the famous Bled Cream Cake (kremšnita) – the ultimate sweet treat. Or, if you’ve just finished your full lake loop, reward yourself with a scoop (or two) of creamy Bled ice cream – the perfect cool-down. Then why not try the famous toboggan run!

🌅 Evening – Find a lakeside spot, dip your feet in the water, and enjoy the sunset as the church lights twinkle across the lake. Pure magic.

Did you know Hallstatt is home to the oldest salt mine in the world? Over 7,000 years of history hidden beneath the mountains… and it’s way more fun than it sounds!

From the moment you take the funicular up, you’re stepping into a whole other world. We slid down the giant wooden miners’ slides (channelling full Squid Game vibes … even with jumpsuits 🤣), wandered through centuries old tunnels, and learned just how valuable “white gold” really was to this little lakeside village.

The kids loved the interactive displays, though let’s be honest, they were far more fascinated by the idea that you can actually taste salt on the walls 😅 (we may or may not have joined them… strictly for science of course!). And the best part… riding the tiny train back out through the mountain… bumpy, fast, and the perfect finale to a salty adventure 🚂✨

This tour was a mix of history lesson, playground, and mini theme park all rolled into one. Even if you don’t walk out a salt expert (we certainly didn’t 😂), you definitely walk out with a big smile and a new appreciation for this beautiful little village.

Nestled on the edge of Hallstätter See and surrounded by towering alpine peaks, Hallstatt is one of the prettiest villages we have ever stepped foot in. Colourful houses line the waterfront, with narrow streets leading up to viewpoints that look like they are made for storybooks.

The village itself is car free, which makes wandering through the streets even more magical (and peaceful). We stayed in a camping aire about 2 miles down the road, from there we could either walk along the lakeside path or hop on a very short bus ride straight into the village. Perfect for soaking up the views without worrying about parking (check out my Austria highlights for the park up night views overlooking Hallstatt itself!)

We wandered through the old town, stopped for coffee by the water and took our time enjoying the atmosphere. The kids loved spotting swans along the lakefront and exploring the little alleyways that wind up behind the main square.

💡 Top Tips for visiting and staying in Hallstatt:

• Staying just outside the village is ideal, since Hallstatt itself is car free. The bus links are easy and quick.
• Early morning or later in the evening is best to avoid the busiest crowds.
• If you have got time, visit the salt mines or take the funicular up for incredible panoramic views (more to come on this one - it was a great experience 😍)
• For photographers, the “classic view” of Hallstatt is at the northern end of the lakefront 📸
Although if I am totally honest, don’t feel the pressure to take that same picture as everyone else, the beauty is all around, so many amazing angles to see and take photos of!

Hallstatt really does feel like stepping back in time, peaceful, charming and surrounded by some of Austria’s most stunning scenery.

🌅 Sunset Speedboat Cruise 🚢
with the added bonus of dolphins 🐬

Rovinj from the water is a whole new kind of magic 🧡 As if our stop in Croatia wasn’t magical enough… we set off on a Sunset Dolphin Tour by Speedboat, and it was honestly one of the highlights of our trip! ✨

We boarded a gorgeous cream leather speedboat (just 10 people max - no crowded tourist boats here!) that picked us up directly from the pier at our campsite. Drinks in hand, we cruised along the coastline, passing Rovinj’s colourful houses glowing in the golden light 🌅

And then, the moment we were waiting for… dolphins! 🐬 We patiently watched the horizon until suddenly, there they were, playing in the waves as the sun set behind them. A pinch me kind of experience!!

If you’re heading to Rovinj, I can’t recommend this enough 🧡 The intimate setting, the beautiful views and of course, the dolphins made it unforgettable.

Imagine stepping out of your van to see crystal clear water perfectly reflecting jagged Dolomite peaks. So amazing it feels like a movie scene!

Parking just steps from the lake, grabbing a coffee, and soaking it all in… it’s the kind of view you’ll never forget.

Tips for your visit:

✅ Closest car park: Car Park 4, right by the lake. Other car parks are slightly cheaper but further away.
🛣️ Toll road: Usually €28, pay online. But if you arrive after 4pm it’s free.

🅿️ Parking cost: €45 overnight, €30 if staying under 24h

🎟️ Payment: Take a ticket at the barrier and pay at the machine when you leave

🚐 Barrier: Car park closes for campers around 5pm (under 2m cars still allowed) - thank you @vanventures_of_five for the heads up!

🥐 Extras: Toilets open, coffee & pastries nearby, epic sunrise guaranteed

We arrived after 4pm (toll free) and didn’t stay the full 24 hours (only €30)… a visit that could have cost €73 ended up just €30!

…and the views? Absolutely priceless 🏔️
